While the warm and dry spring has benefited those with declining forage crops it has also been partially responsible for a decline in the reliance on concentrate feeds and reduced demand for cereals etc.

Cereal prices have fallen away from those at the start of the year.

Lifting conditions as well as the warm winter and spring have meant that potatoes have come to the market in such a way as to meet demand avoiding any ‘spike’ in the market. Those who have invested in expensive cold storage await to see whether there will be premium for late stored crops or whether there will be an early harvest.

Livestock farmers continue to face challenges as processors continue to balance the needs of farmers and the requirements of supermarkets.
